Kratom Review Is Kratom An Anti-Inflammatory Drug?
But we can’t conclude that kratom is an anti-inflammatory drug without also knowing the extent of any anti-inflammatory effects. We know, from clinical trials, that many chemicals in the kratom leaf can prevent inflammatory responses. But we don’t know what doses to dose and if some or all of these anti-inflammatory effects are associated with addiction or abuse. Does kratom act as an anti-inflammatory, or is it an addictive compound that could potentially lead to dependence or abuse? We need to conduct clinical trials to answer these questions.
Should DEA go ahead with the emergency scheduling of kratom, the study findings from Akinnaso and several other scientists should be of great concern.
Although we don’t know for sure, I think the FDA recommendation and warning in the FDA letter are a strong indication that they are concerned about some level of abuse potential.
Making matters even worse, Akinnaso’s and numerous other scientists, like Aaron Panofsky, Dr. Karen M. Jaffe, Dr. Nancy U. Bauer, Dr. Gary W. Fiske, Dr. Henry J. Giovannucci and others are now confirming that there is also a case of withdrawal syndrome associated with kratom (Panofsky, 2016). If withdrawal is occurring, it means that people who consume kratom are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which include cravings and a withdrawal symptom called kaposi’s sarcoma, which is a skin rash.
When it comes to drug dependence, one of the cardinal signs of drug dependence is the need for a drug, or the desire to use a drug again, even if it causes significant harm. The idea of kratom withdrawal is a sign that it has the potential to become a prescription drug that people will seek out in order to avoid the withdrawal.
